From Osman Gazi to Atatürk: The Centennial of Our Republic and Yalova / July 27, 2023

In Yalova, the symposium titled “From Osman Gazi to Atatürk: The Centennial of Our Republic and Yalova” was organized. The symposium, held in collaboration with the Provincial Special Administration, Yalova Municipality, Yalova University, and the Halil İnalcık Ottoman History Research Institute, took place in Yalova on July 27, 1302, following the Bafeus Battle, where the Ottoman Empire gained state status. This symposium was dedicated to the memory of the historian Prof. Dr. Halil İnalcık.

In his opening speech, Hasan Soygüzel, the President of the Provincial General Assembly, mentioned that the symposium series, which has been ongoing since 2009, started with Halil İnalcık, focusing on the establishment date of the Ottoman Empire. Soygüzel emphasized that even after Halil İnalcık’s passing, they continue to organize these events to maintain İnalcık’s scientific legacy and commemorate his memory. He noted that four books have been published from the articles presented in previous meetings, and this particular symposium focused on the 100th anniversary of the Republic, Yalova, and the historical line connecting Osman Gazi to Atatürk.

In the first session of the symposium, Prof. Dr. Yusuf Erdoğlu delivered a speech on the active utilization of the region following Osman Gazi’s landing in Yalova in 1302. Throughout the day, sessions continued with presentations by Prof. Dr. Özer Ergenç, Prof. Dr. Seçil Karal Akgün, Prof. Dr. Hatice Şahin, Prof. Dr. Tuncay Ercan Sepetçioğlu, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selçuk Seçkin, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gürhan Yellice, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mine Ersevinç, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hacer Karabağ Arslan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fevzi Çakmak, Instructor Cihan Yalvar, and Muhsin Sevencan.
